6 Days Inner Mongolia Birding Tour

This birding journey mainly focuses on Inner Mongolia, with extended in birding stops spanning small corner of Jilin and Heilongjiang. We mostly birdwatch around forested, wetlands and reservoirs across the Greater Khingan Mountains in China’s far northeast. The tour aims to seek scarce highlight birds rarely spotted and documented by birders throughout the Far East, including Jankowski's Bunting, Swinhoe’s Rail, Band-bellied Crake, Red-crowned Crane, Ural Owl, Great Grey Owl, plus multiple leaf warbler species.
ITINERARY



6 Days Inner Mongolia Birding Tour



Day 1


Ulanhot Airport – Kerqinyouyizhongqi (230 km)


You will be greeted and picked up at Ulanhot Airport, followed by a 2.5-hour drive to Kerqinyouyizhongqi.


Target Birds: Jankowski's Bunting, Chinese Penduline Tit, Beijing Babbler, Meadow Bunting


Accommodation: Kerqinyouyizhongqi






Day 2


Kerqinyouyizhongqi – Qiqihar (440 km)


Morning: Birding at Hanggali Lake. Target species: Kentish Plover, Amur Falcon, Whiskered Tern, Black-browed Reed Warbler, Reed Bunting.


We then drive 5 hours to Qiqihar and explore Dongsheng Reservoir. Expected birds: Baer’s Pochard, White-winged Tern, Von Schrenck’s Bittern, Eurasian Bittern, Reed Parrotbill, Bearded Reedling.


A short one-hour transfer brings us back to downtown Qiqihar for the night.

Day 3


Qiqihar – Dongsheng Reservoir – Zhalong Wetland – Wurqihan (600 km)


A 40-minute ride takes us back to Dongsheng Reservoir to chase Von Schrenck’s Bittern.


Next, drive one hour to Zhalong Wetland, famous for Red-crowned Crane, Common Crane and Marsh Grassbird.


After birding, embark on a 7-hour long drive north to Wurqihan.





Day 4 & Day 5


Full days of field birding in the Wurqihan area

Swinhoe’s Rail, Band-bellied Crake, Chinese Bush Warbler, Mandarin Duck, Oriental Cuckoo, Far Eastern Curlew, Black-tailed Godwit, Common Buzzard, Greater Spotted Eagle, Ural Owl, Pallas’s Grasshopper Warbler, Three-toed Woodpecker, Eurasian Wryneck, Radde’s Bush Warbler, Lanceolated Warbler, Gray’s Grasshopper Warbler, Citrine Wagtail, White-headed Bunting, Chestnut Bunting, Black-faced Bunting, Black Stork, Crested Honey Buzzard, Great Grey Owl, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Ashy Minivet, Grey Nightjar, Siberian Rubythroat, White-naped Crane, Azure Tit, Eurasian Skylark, Richard’s Pipit, Northern Wheatear





Day 6


Birding session in the early morning, followed by a lengthy transfer to Hailar Airport for your departure flight.
