14 Days China Winter Specialties Birding Tour
Next, we’ll head south to the tropical island of Hainan, where we’ll chase sought-after endemics such as Hainan Partridge and Hainan Peacock-Pheasant. One of the biggest highlights here is the chance to get incredibly close, unbeatable views of Spoon-billed Sandpipers — local wintering flocks are remarkably tame, making for unforgettable sightings and photography opportunities. To wrap up our core route, we’ll venture into dramatic limestone karst forests in search of the ultra-restricted Nonggang Babbler, a true specialty of this unique landscape. For anyone wanting to expand their trip, our optional three-night Yunnan extension targets rare highlights including the threatened White-speckled Laughingthrush, Giant Nuthatch, charming Black-and-white Snub-nosed Monkeys, and plenty of other exclusive Yunnan bird species.
China Winter Specialties Birding Tour
Day 1
Arrive at Beijing International Airport (PKX). Our team will greet you and transfer you to a quiet mountain hotel west of the city. We’ll settle in and rest up for our first day of birding tomorrow. Overnight in Lingshan.
Day 2
The snowy, crisp mountain slopes around Lingshan come alive with winter birdlife this time of year. We’ll spend the day spotting winter migrants such as Siberian Accentor, Pallas’s Rosefinch, Chinese Beautiful Rosefinch, and Long-tailed Rosefinch, plus impressive species like Cinereous Vulture, Red-throated Thrush, Naumann's Thrush, and Güldenstädt’s Redstart. We’ll also look out for local resident birds including Beijing Babbler, Plain Laughingthrush, Silver-throated Bushtit, Meadow Bunting, and Godlewski’s Bunting. Overnight in Lingshan.
Day 3
We’ll enjoy a full morning birding on the local slopes, focusing heavily on accentors and rosefinches. Afterwards, we drive back toward Beijing, making convenient stops at hotspots where we might spot Baikal Teal, Mandarin Duck, or wandering flocks of Japanese Waxwing — classic winter visitors to the area. In the evening, we’ll board a flight to Nanchang, where we’ll base ourselves for the next five nights. Overnight in Nanchang.
Day 4
Our morning birding session targets one of our most wanted species: Baer's Pochard, with large winter flocks regularly recorded here. We’ll also likely encounter Masked Laughingthrush and White-browed Laughingthrush, plus a great selection of buntings, including the desirable Yellow-browed Bunting. If recent sightings confirm activity, we’ll try our luck finding the scarce Collared Crow. In the evening, we’ll explore local city parks to spot Grey-backed Thrush and Dusky Thrush. Overnight in Nanchang.
Day 5–6
We dedicate these two full days to exploring Poyang Lake, one of the world’s most incredible winter waterbird habitats and the only remaining winter home for the elegant Siberian Crane. We’ll frequently see them alongside Hooded Cranes and White-naped Cranes in large numbers. The reserve hosts plenty of other threatened waterbirds too, including Lesser White-fronted Goose, Swan Goose, and Oriental Stork. Our extensive bird list for these days also covers Brown Crake, Red-billed Starling, Marsh Grassbird, Chinese Penduline Tit, Siberian Pipit, Pallas's Reed Bunting, and Chestnut-eared Bunting. Lucky observers may even spot rare surprises like Chinese Grey Shrike or Ochre-rumped Bunting.
We’ll have plenty of relaxed birding time to appreciate the abundant common species here, such as Taiga Bean Goose, Tundra Bean Goose, Greater White-fronted Goose, Tundra Swan, Eastern Spot-billed Duck, and the strikingly beautiful Falcated Duck, among many others. Overnights in Nanchang.
Day 7
Today we take a rewarding day trip to the scenic valleys of Wuyuan. Our primary target here is the endangered Scaly-sided Merganser, which reliably winters along the valley rivers. After our waterbird watching, we’ll explore local forest trails for woodland species. Winter forest birding here is quieter compared to spring seasons, but we’ll keep an eye out for Chestnut Bulbul, Collared Finchbill, Short-tailed Parrotbill, Huet's Fulvetta, Grey-sided Scimitar Babbler, Chinese Hwamei, and Fork-tailed Sunbird. Even spotting a few of these forest specialties will make the day worthwhile. Overnight in Nanchang.
Day 8
We’ll trade cold northern winter weather for tropical warmth today! A morning flight takes us south to Sanya on Hainan Island’s sunny southern coast. We’ll head straight to Jianfengling National Nature Reserve in time for an afternoon hide-based birding session. Overnight at Jianfengling.
Day 9–10
These two full days focus entirely on the incredible birdlife of Jianfengling National Nature Reserve. Since 2022, ultra-desirable species like Hainan Partridge and Hainan Peacock-Pheasant have become regular visitors to the reserve’s feeding hides, offering fantastic, consistent viewing opportunities. The feeding stations also attract endemic Swinhoe’s Black-throated Laughingthrush, vivid Rufous-cheeked Laughingthrush, and hopefully Indochinese Green Magpie. We’ll also chase key endemics including Hainan Leaf Warbler, alongside near-endemic favorites such as Chinese Barbet, Ratchet-tailed Treepie, and Yellow-billed Nuthatch, plus local Hainan subspecies of Red-headed Trogon, Pale Blue Flycatcher, and Fork-tailed Sunbird. The shy Mountain Scops Owl is also surprisingly easy to spot here — this is one of the world’s best locations to actually see, not just hear, these charming owls.
We’ll also visit Hainan’s northwest coast during low tide to seek out Spoon-billed Sandpipers. These critically endangered shorebirds are incredibly habituated to human visitors here, allowing us to approach within meters and watch them feed peacefully on the mudflats — an absolutely phenomenal wildlife experience. We’ll also keep watch for Nordmann's Greenshank and Black-faced Spoonbill, though their presence varies yearly. Depending on tide timings and our daytime birding success, we may try optional spotlighting for Oriental Bay Owl in the evening (sightings not guaranteed). Overnights at Jianfengling.
Day 11
We’ll enjoy one final morning of productive Hainan birding before checking out and flying from Sanya to Nanning. From Nanning, we’ll take a scenic drive out to the stunning limestone landscapes surrounding Nonggang National Nature Reserve. Overnight just outside the Nonggang reserve area.
Day 12–13
Our two days at Nonggang center on finding the highly localized Nonggang Babbler, a specialty confined to this small Vietnam-border limestone karst region. In winter, these secretive babblers descend from high rocky peaks to visit managed feeding zones, giving us excellent chances for clear, close views. Away from the feeding hides, birding can be quieter and more challenging, so we’ll spend most of our time moving between prime hides to maximize sightings.
The area hosts a lovely range of secondary species, including Bar-backed Partridge, Blue-rumped Pitta, White-winged Magpie, Black-throated Laughingthrush, David's Fulvetta, Yellow-eyed Babbler, Chestnut-capped Babbler, Buff-breasted Babbler, Streaked Wren-Babbler, White-tailed Robin, and the rare Pale-footed Bush Warbler. Multiple leaf warbler species also winter in these forests, including Limestone Leaf Warbler, Bianchi's Warbler, and White-spectacled Warbler, though they can be tricky to spot. We’ll also actively search for the elusive White-eared Night Heron, which has been reliably seen here in recent winter seasons. As an optional bonus activity, we can visit a nearby reserve home to China’s largest remaining wild population of White-headed Langur. Overnights outside Nonggang NNR.
Day 14
Our main birding tour concludes today. We’ll transfer to Nanning Airport (NNG) for departures, with regular connecting flights available to Guangzhou International Airport (CAN) or back to Beijing International Airport (PKX), our original starting point.
YUNNAN ENDEMICS EXTENSION ITINERARY
Extension Day 1
Instead of departing from Nanning after the main tour, extension participants will take an early morning high-speed train straight to Kunming. We’ll use the remaining daylight hours to bird a reliable hotspot for the endangered Giant Nuthatch and endemic Yunnan Nuthatch. Overnight in Dali.
Extension Day 2
Today’s birding takes us across the upper Yangtze River floodplains and surrounding coniferous hillsides. The star target here is the incredibly rare and beautiful White-speckled Laughingthrush, which is easily viewed at a dedicated photography hide. The same hide also attracts Black-faced Laughingthrush, Spotted Laughingthrush, Elliot’s Laughingthrush, and Black-streaked Scimitar Babbler. We’ll also seek out other Yunnan specialties: Eye-ringed Parrotbill, unique Rufous-tailed Babbler (locally known as Moupinia), Spectacled Fulvetta, Sharpe's Rosefinch, Crimson-browed Finch, and Black-headed Greenfinch. Overnight in Lijiang.
Extension Day 3
We set off before dawn for a long scenic drive to the Black-and-white Snub-nosed Monkey Reserve, where we’ll enjoy unforgettable up-close encounters with these rare, striking primates. The surrounding forests also hold great birding potential, including Yunnan Fulvetta, Maroon-backed Accentor, and occasional Tibetan Serin. On our journey back toward Lijiang along the Yangtze River, we’ll search for the scarce Striped Prinia and revisit previous birding spots to tick off any missing species from our list. Overnight in Lijiang.
Extension Day 4
We’ll spend our final full day exploring local birding spots around Lijiang to maximize our species count and chase any remaining targets. In the late afternoon, our extended tour finishes with transfers to Lijiang Airport (LJG). Participants can book evening connecting flights to Guangzhou (CAN) or return to Beijing (PKX).
